I assume that it's an anglicized form of the german Kaethner/KΓ€thner (Sounds very familiar in pronounciation). A Kaethner was a small farmer having an own home and a small portion of land for farming, that most times wasn't enough to live from, so they worked as handymans, teachers or something similar, although some worked as full-time farmers if the land was big enough. Socially they were above the BΓΌdners (having an own home, but only a little garden to it) and above the day laborers.
Searched for an anglicized version and this was the only name that sounded familiar and would be the name i choose.
