He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross "for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with the 3rd Battalion, 320th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Sommerance, France November 1, 1918." He was killed in action in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, in the waning days of World War I. He is commemorated with a memorial painting and two memorial sculptures in Maryland courthouses.
